QTL Experiment in Brief |
Animals: | A Brahman Hereford bull previously used in the USDA reference population was mated to Hereford, Angus, and F1 cows from the Germ Plasm Evaluation Cycle IV Project to produce 300 offspring born in 1994. |
Breeds associated:
n/a
|
Design: | Weights of rib fat, rib bone, rib muscle, fat thickness, marbling score, and longissimus muscle area were adjusted to a constant hot carcass weight. Carcass traits predicted were retail product yield, fat trim yield, and bone yield. |
Analysis: | A primary genomic screen was conducted using 238 microsatellite markers. Ninety-four of the 300 progeny were selected to be those with the highest RPYD and lowest FT or the lowest RPYD and highest FT. |
